Abstract
1328847 Rotary positive-displacement compressors ATLAS COPCO AB 12 Oct 1970 [5 Oct 1970] 48467/70 Heading F1F A two-stage compressor unit comprises seriesconnected compressors 2, 3 driven by an electric motor or I.C. engine (not shown) through a coupling 24, 25, a shaft 23, a gear ring 29 and gears 31, 32, a cooling fan 48 being coupled to said shaft. The low-pressure compressor 3 includes a main rotor 4 and a gate rotor 5 secured to shafts 59, 60 and furnished with teeth 76, 86, these rotors being rendered hollow so as to be dynamically balanced. The profiles of the rotors are described with reference to Figs.6 and 9 (not shown). The rotor surfaces may be coated with a material e.g. paint, that can be partially worn away so as to ensure adequate sealing. Inlet and outlet passages 68, 71 for the working fluid communicate with corresponding ports 69, 70, 72 formed in a housing portion 50 and end walls 52, 53. The ports 70, 72 are formed in each of the end walls, the ports 72 being controlled by the rotor 5. Whereas the housing 50 is air cooled the end walls are cooled by oil stored in a casing 84 for synchronizing gears 9, 10. The high-pressure compressor 2 is identical to the compressor 3 saving that it is smaller. A flange 45 can be used to attach the unit to the motor or engine. The compressor 3 may be replaced by an intermeshing-screw compressor. The unit may comprise a further intermeshing-screw compressor to effect an intermediate stage of compression.
