Abstract

1328376 X-ray exposure control PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 1 Sept 1970 [2 Sept 1969] 41835/70 Heading G1A X-ray exposure control apparatus includes an ionisation chamber 20 sensing radiation passing through a body 19 being radiographed, the detector output being used both in a dose measurement channel 8, 13 by which the attainment of a predetermined dose terminates the exposure by opening switch 17 and a dose-rate measurement channel 8-12 by which the length of the exposure is also adjusted in dependence on the absorption characteristics of body 19 (i.e. fat or thin patient etc) by switching in one of a number of tappings 5-7 to alter the X-ray tube high voltage or by feedback to the integrator device 8 in which the switch-off dose is pre-set. Since the channel 8-13 includes the integrator 8, channel 8-12 includes a differentiator 9. Alternatively, the dose rate dependent detector output may feed directly to comparator circuit 10. This compares the rate with pre-settable upper and lower threshold values. These levels are pre-set in comparator 10 for a number of different organs that may be required to be radiographed, a number of voltage dividers being provided for this purpose. When the measurement is above, between or below these levels, contacts 5, 6 or 7 respectively, are used in the tube supply circuit. As an alternative, the tappings on the autotransformer 4 may be pre-set instead of the levels in 10. A thyristor may replace switches 5-7. The fact that the measurement is above or below threshold values may be indicated optically or acoustically. Adjustment of the voltage supply may be in steps.
