Abstract

706,671. Photo-electric control of X-ray dosage. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. June 26, 1952 [Aug. 16, 1951], No. 16088/52. Class 40 (3) X-ray dosage is controlled by an image intensifier the photo-electric current of which is used to control the radiation source and/or photographic apparatus. As shown closing of a manual switch 15 energizes relay 19 and 12. Relay 12 energizes the X-ray supply transformer 11 and sets in operation the automatic shutter of a camera 6. The X-rays, after passing through the object under examination are received on a zinc sulphide screen 3 which is separated by a thin sheet of glass from a photo-emissive screen of antimony. At the opposite end of the intensifier is an output screen which may be of zinc cadmium sulphide. The photo-electric current passes through a resistor 7 the drop across which controls the bias of a tube 22 the anode of which is supplied through resistors 17 and 21 and normally open contacts of relay 19. A resistor 25 and condenser 26 are parallel with resistor 21 so that the condenser charges at a rate dependent on the photo-electric current in the image intensifier. When the condenser potential achieves a predetermined value a gas discharge tube 16 which derives its supply voltage from the drop in resistor 17 fires and operates a relay 14. This relay de-energizes the transformer 11 and switches off the automatic shutter. The circuit is restored by opening switch 15 when relay 19 short circuits condenser 26 and cuts off the supply through resistor 17 to tube 22. In consequence the tube 16 is also cut off.
