Abstract
1357395 X-ray tubes PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 28 Oct 1971 [31 Oct 1970] 50166/71 Heading H2H The size of the focal spot in an X-ray tube 9 is adjusted in accordance with the tube loading by means of a supplementary electrode 11 which is connected to a movable tap 7 on a control transformer 2b, 2a coupled to the tube anode and cathode, means being provided for varying the tap position in accordance with variations in the tube loading. In a tube 9 with an extra electrode 11, which may be constructed as specified in patents 478,926 or 839,945, the spot size is proportional to the ratio (voltage between cathode and electrode/voltage between anode and electrode) which is varied by adjustment of the tap 7 linking the transformer 2a, 2b to a high voltage transformer 4a, 4b. If the apparatus is such that the tube current and voltage are independently adjustable then the tap 7 can be arranged to be controlled by a voltage which is the sum of the voltages from two logarithmic potentiometers (one for voltage and one for current) so that the tap position is proportional to the logarithm of the power. In the case where, as shown, the tube voltage reamins constant as the current varies, then a control knob 10 for varying the current is mechanically linked to means for moving the tap.
