Staple length polyester, nylon 6 or 6,6, rayon, polypropylene or polyacrylonitrile fibres, or mixtures thereof and/or with collagen or cellulose fibres are formed into a web which is needled. The web is then impregnated with an aqueous solution of gelatine, which is coagulated by an alum, chrome, formaldehyde, glutoraldehyde or vegetable tanning agent. A plasticizer such as glycol, glycerol, butyl phthalyl butyl glycollate or a high viscosity lipid may be present in the gelatine or tanning solution, or may be applied separately. This increases the suppleness of the web, which contains 5-90% gelatine, based on the weight of gelatine plus fibres, and 0-10% plasticizer, based on the weight of gelatine, fibres, plasticizer and binder. The binder, if any, is a polyurethane, acrylate polybutadieneacrylonitrile rubber or a polyamide, preferably a terpolymer of caprolactam/hexamethylene diamine adipic acid/hexamethylene diamine and sebacic acid. In Example 5 a solution of polybutadiene-acrylontrile in methyl ethyl ketone is applied before the gelatine, whilst in Example 12 the gelatine was applied and tanned before a solution of polyamide and plasticizer in methanol, which were then coagulated in water. In Example I the binder is in the form of polypropylene fibres, which are activated by calendering at 150‹ C. Alternatively a terpolymer or N substituted polyamide may be impregnated simultaneously with the binder. In Example 11 no binder is used apart from the gelatine. The binder comprises 2-50% of the weight of the bonded web. Coating; laminating.-The web may be given a coating or surface layer of N substituted polyamide, polyamide terpolymer, or a mixture of the two, or of polyurethane. Glycerol, glycol calcium chloride or zinc chloride is mixed with the resin and leached out of the film with water to make it microporous. The coating may be applied as a solution directly to the web, or it may be applied to a release paper and concentrated. The web is then pressed against the film, the remaining solvent driven off and the release paper removed. Alternatively the coating may be applied to release paper; the solvent completely driven off, the resulting layer leached in water, dried, and laminated to the web by means of adhesive.
