Abstract

1389804 Treating simulated suede TORAY INDUSTRIES INC 23 March 1973 [23 March 1972 21 Dec 1972] 14071/73 Heading B2E [Also in Division D1] A method of finishing simulated suede leather sheet material comprises passing a sheet of a polyurethane elastomer impregnated non-woven fabric together with a liquid through a venturi-nozzle of cross-sectional area of 10-300 cm<SP>2</SP>, which area is 2-22 times the cross-sectional area of the sheet, the sheet having a thickness of 0.2-4.0 mm and a width of 5-200 cm, the non-woven fabric having naps on at least one surface and being formed from superfine staple fibres of denier 0.01-0.3, the staple fibres having a breaking strength of less than 3g. and an elongation at break of 60-180%, the impregnating polyurethane elastomer being the reaction product of a diol mixture of 20-40 parts by wt. of a polycaprolactone diol having a molecular weight of 1,000 to 3,000 and 60-80 parts by wt. of a polytetramethylene ether glycol having a molecular weight of 1,000-3,000 with an organic diisocyanate and a diamine chain extender. The fabric is preferably made of two component fibres from which one component is dissolved away. Particularly preferred are fibres of polyethylene terephthalate in bundles formed by dissolving styrene "sea" leaving the polyester "islands" of an island-in-the-sea fibre needlepunched fabric. Optionally the fabric is "set" with water-soluble temporary polyvinyl-alcohol or carboxymethyl cellulose binder before the "sea" part of the fibres is leached and the polyurethane is applied from solution followed by water-coagulation which also leaches the temporary binder. Preferably the liquid is an aqueous liquid containing a dye. The chain extender is preferably an aromatic primary diamine and several examples of suitable diamines and diisocyanates are given.
