Abstract
A material for use in making rain coats, leggings, caps, foot-wear, &c. which will be vapour conducting or transpiratory and yet be impervious to dust, be water-repellent, and be able to withstand strain, is formed of a fabric and a colloid combined with a swelling material. The colloids used are fish, and other animal glues, gum tragacanth, Irish or Iceland moss, agar-agar, and the like, and the swelling material, glycerine, glucose, molasses, &c., and water if desired. Gelatine and glycerine in the proportion of 1 to 2 by weight is a suitable mixture. The mixture may be set by treating with formaldehyde or by heat. The colloid may be treated with a deodorant such as methyl benzoate or with an antiseptic such as formin and with calcium chloride or the like to ensure its hygroscopic properties. The colloidal material may be spread on the fabric, such as duck, or impregnated in the fabric.
