Abstract

1321085 Folding wheel chair O F MACLAREN 19 April 1971 [17 April 1970] 18489/70 Heading B7B A folding wheel chair comprises interpivoted X-like frames 1, 2 pivotally interconnected by laterally spaced folding brace elements 3, 4 and at least two collapsible strut means 5, 6 interconnecting respectively the members of a rear X-frame 1 and the brace elements 3, 4. Each brace element is formed by two tube sections 3A, 3B interconnected by a knuckle joint 3E having a spring lock. Leg elements 7, 8, pivotally attached at one end to the brace elements 3, 4 each carry a rear wheel pair 11 the wheels being mounted on a lever plate 13 pivotally attached to the leg element 7 or 8. Upward and downward movement of the plates 13 are resiliently checked by a rubber block 17 and rubber tubing 19 respectively, Fig. 6. The front wheels 11 are freely rotatable and carry similar suspension units as the rear wheels. Each rear wheel pair is provided with a spring loaded brake mechanism comprising a pedal lever 30 which is interconnected with toggle arms 31, 32 and spring 33A such that the end 32A of toggle arm 32 is forced into contact with the wheel upon braking. A pliable seat back 35 is attached to two laterally-spaced back members 36 which are pivotally attached at one end to seat tubes 41 and slidably at their other ends to the brace elements 3, 4. Also, the seat tubes 41 having an attached fabric panel 40 are pivotally and slidably attached at their ends to the brace elements 3, 4 and leg elements 7, 8 respectively. A plastics spring catch 55 formed as a bell crank has a notch 56A which engages a stud (56C), Fig. 3 (not shown), on the upper tube section 3A to retain the folded condition of the chair. A self propulsion unit comprises a hand crank 64 which rotates the wheels by a pulley and belt mechanism, the wheel pairs 11 being provided with a grooved pulley 11A. The chair may be provided with a detachable table top 70, 71.
