Abstract
1320890 Carbon fibres NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 25 June 1970 9867/73 Divided out of 1319955 Heading C1A Carbon fibre is treated by being heated at a temperature above 800‹ C. in an atmosphere comprising an inert carrier gas and a halogenated hydrocarbon. The halogenated hydrocarbon may be carbon tetrachloride or methylene dichloride. The inert carrier gas is preferably oxygen-free nitrogen. The fibre may be treated by being drawn continuously through a furnace containing the atmosphere. The preferred treatment temperature is 1500‹ C. and the process may be carried out at a pressure above ambient atmospheric pressure. It is preferred that the relationship between the length of the furnace and the draw rate of the fibre is such that the fibre is in the central region of the furnace at a temperature of 1500‹ C. for at least four minutes. The process is exemplified as being applied to carbon fibres derived from p.a.n. but fibres from aliphatic nylon, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinylidene chloride, aromatic polyester, aromatic polyamide, and cellulose materials may be used.
