1318333 Producing shaped carbon articles JAPAN EXLAN CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [21 Feb 1970] 22872/71 Heading C1A A shaped article is prepared by heating a shaped article of acrylic copolymer containing 2-40% by weight of lactone units at a temperature between 200‹ C. and the carbonizing temperature, and then further heating at a higher temperature. The lactone units are represented by the formulae The article may be carbonized by heating first between 200‹ and 500‹ C. and then above 500‹ C., or it may be graphitized by heating for sufficient time above 1500‹ C. Tension may be applied during the heating step so that the heated article is stretched from 1À0 to 1À3 times the length of the unheated article. The preferred article is a fibre or filament.
