Abstract

1317264 Two-part couplings CANNON ELECTRIC (GREAT BRITAIN) Ltd 19 April 1971 [23 March 1970] 13892/70 Heading H2E An electrical connector for flat strip cables comprises an insulating member having a portion 1 with a U-shaped surface and two parallel legs 4, 5 so spaced that the corresponding portion 1 of a similar device is a force fit between them, and slots 6, 7 are provided in each leg through which is threaded a strip cable with conductors bared within the connector. Studs 3, (30, Fig. 7, not shown), on the connector engage holes or notches in the cable for location purposes. The legs carry bendable members 12, which fit into recesses 13 and engage further notches on the cable, and tabs 11 which enable the connector to be fitted to a panel 10. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 7 not shown) the slots 7 are replaced by retainers (24, 25), having legs with hooks (27), to lock the strip cable to the connector. Also the U-shaped portion has polarizing bulges (31) which fit corresponding recesses (32) in a similar device. Figs. 3-6 (not shown) depict such connectors in use. Two final embodiments of the invention are for electrically connecting conventional wires to strip cables mounted on the previous embodiments. In the embodiment of Fig. 10a (not shown) bared strip cable conductors (53) are passed around the U-shaped portion and are electrically connected to wires (54) extending between the legs which are then encapsulated in an insulating potting compound. The encapsulation is grooved so that it may be held in a hole in a panel by tongues (51, 52, Fig. 10b not shown). In the embodiment of Fig. 11a the U- shaped portion is hollow and has rectangular apertures in which are provided electrical contacts (60, Fig. 11b, not shown) replacing the strip cable conductors (53).
