Abstract

131,034. Thring, L. G. P. March 28, 1918. Projectiles.-Relates to sub-calibre projectiles, and consists in providing a carrier in the form of a sleeve or collar divided longitudinally into two or more parts and having internal annular ribs engaging corresponding grooves in the projectile, the rear wall of the grooves being inclined. Immediately ton leaving the gun, the carrier drops away from the projectile. In the construction shown, the carrier is divided into three parts and is formed with two guiding-flanges F, G, the rear one of which is perforated so that the gas pressure acts mainly on the front flange. Small spaces E, which are left between the ribs on the carrier and , the projectile, prevent the carrier from acthering to the projectile, and the entry of the gases into these recesses assists the stripping of the carrier from the projectile. The parts of the carrier are held together by the cartridge case or by a binding-material which will readily be fired and disintegrated while the projectile is in the gun. The projectile may have a rear part or tail shaped in various ways.
