Abstract

484,346. Ammunition cartridges. SAGEB SOC. ANON. DE GESTION ET D'EXPLOITATION DE BREVETS. April 2, 1937, No. 9379. Convention date, April 3, 1936. [Class 9 (i)] Relates to cartridges for rifled firearms of the kind comprising a case in the base of which is mounted a socket for guiding the rear portion of the projectile which extends into the case for the greater portion of its length, the propulsive charge being situated both inside and outside said socket. According to the invention, the guiding socket is provided, in the rear of the projectile and adjacent the base of the case, with lateral perforations which establish communication between the portions of propulsive charge located on both sides of the walls of the socket. As shown in Fig. 1, the projectile 1 extends for the greater portion of its length into the case 2 and has its rear portion guided and centred in a socket 4 firmly attached to the case. Perforations 8 in the socket 4 place the charges of powder within the socket 4 and in the annular space 7 in communication with each other. Saw-tooth grooves 10 having rearwardly directed tips or edges are provided throughout the whole or a part of the length of the outer walls of the projectile in order to impart a gyratory movement to the projectile by engagement in the grooves of the gun. If desired, similar grooves or grooves of channel section separated by rectangular collars may be provided at the rear end of the fuze body 3. Fig. 5 shows a modification in which the projectile is guided in the socket 4 by a single band 10a and has its base dished at 1a so as to deflect towards the rear the jet of gas from the percussion cap 6. If desired, the whole or part of the external surface of the projectile may be provided with an electrolytic or other coating of cadmium or graphite.
