Abstract

1309141 I. C. engine exhaust systems T R CASSEL 13 April 1970 17359/70 Heading F1B An exhaust system includes at least one silencer 24, 28 connected tothe exhaust pipe 20, 22 or the exhaust manifold 12, 14 and the or each silencer is adapted for attenuation of selected wave frequencies and comprises a hollow structure 34, 42 of plastic material which will maintain its shape at the ambient temperatures, e. g. 150 to 200‹ F. , at the location of the silencer and a conduit portion 30, 38 secured to the pipe or manifold to communicate with the interior thereof. A silencer 26 comprising a perforated portion of the pipe 20 within a tubular casing 36 is located between the silencers 24 and 28. The silencer 24 may be tuned to attenuate the fundamental and third harmonic frequencies, the silencer 26 the seventh harmonic frequency and the silencer 28 the fifth harmonic frequency. The total length of the plastic structure 42 and conduit portion 38 may correspond to one-fourth of the wave length of the frequency to be attenuated. Details of the position of the silencers in relation to the length of the exhaust system are given in the Specification.
