Abstract

1303065 Liquid fuel burners SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 6 May 1970 [8 May 1969] 23443/69 Heading F4T A burner for liquid fuel comprises a hollow body part 1 and a hollow central barrel part 2 for receiving a coolant supplied through a tube 4, an annular main channel 6 through which oxidant is supplied, an annular fuel supply channel 7, concentric with the main channel and debouching therein through at least one (series of) lateral opening(s) (8, 13), and a bluff body 9 having an end face 10 provided in the main channel downstream of the or one of the opening(s) (8) but retracted with respect to the outlet end of the main channel 6 to form a common annular discharge duct 12 for the oxidant and fuel. The lateral openings 8 and 13 are either a circumferential slot or a series of slit-shaped openings. In alternative embodiments the main channel 6 is divided, at least along part of its length into an inner and an outer section by a partition wall (14) terminating in, or adjacent, the bluff body 9, the end face 10 being substantially perpendicular to the flow in the main channel. Also the fuel supply channel 7 may run for all or part of its length within the wall 14. In the embodiment of Fig. 6 the burner constitutes the bottom of a flame chamber 19 and is movable such that the axial length of the chamber may be varied. Also a pilot fuel annular supply channel 17, preferably for gaseous fuel, is provided on the hollow body part 1. In alternative embodiments said channel 17 is formed on the hollow barrel 2.
