1303043 Pipe joints BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP Ltd 20 Aug 1970 [20 Aug 1969] 41550/69 Heading F2G The components for forming a pipe joint comprise a first pipe having its end formed into an outwardly directed radial flange, a second pipe also having its mouth formed into an outwardly directed radial flange, and an annular seal of resilient nonmetallic insulating material capable of fitting on both sides of the flange of the first pipe and round the outer edge of that flange. To make the joint the pipes are brought together so that part of the seal is sandwiched between the respective flanges, and curling the flange of the second pipe over the flange of the first pipe so as to form an inwardly directed radial flange separated from the rear face of the flange of the first pipe by a further part of the seal, the two pipes remaining electrically isolated from each other. In one embodiment of the joint so formed (see Fig. 2) the pipe ends are belled at 2, 5 and the seal has a bead 11. A further dished washer 12 of the same material as pipe 4 may prevent creep of the seal during curling of the flange of the second pipe. The joint is ideal for joining dissimilar metals (e.g. stainless steel and aluminium) without the occurrence of electrolytic corrosion. Pipe 4 is preferably of the softer material and may be originally formed with the outer part of the radial flange forming a tube large enough to accommodate flange 3 of pipe 1.
