Abstract
130,015. White & Co., J. S., Harper, J. W., and Mellor, G. A. Dec. 18, 1917. Regulating; valves.-In a two-stroke-engine, the admission of air for scavenging and charging through ports A in the cylinder wall is controlled by a cylindrical valve D rotating within a ported sleeve C, which is adjustable about its axis for reversing or varying the timing of the air admission. Corresponding adjustment is simultaneously effected in the gear which actuates the fuel valves. In the form shown, the port C<1> in the sleeve C is smaller than the corresponding port in the casing A<3>, and the sleeve is turned by means of an arm C<3> formed or mounted on one end of the sleeve. Within and rotating with the valve D is a cam shaft E. The fuel valve is actuated by a single cam J on the shaft E and a lever G pivoted on a stud F on the arm C', so that the lever G is moved circumferentially with respect to the cam when the arm C<3> is moved to adjust the sleeve C. In multicylinder engines, a single cam shaft E is provided, which may carry pairs of valves as shown in Fig 2, each controlling the inlets A<3> of two adjacent cylinders and having a reduced portion D<2> and air inlets D'. The sleeves C are simultaneously adjusted, each arm C<3> being actuated by means of a forked rod X, X<1> connected by a lever to a common shaft turned by means of a hand-wheel. In a modification, each cylinder has one valve D, the valves of adjacent cylinders being connected by a pin, which passes through the arms C' on two adjacent sleeves C, serving in place of the fulcrum pin F and also connecting the sleeves for simultaneous adjustment.
