Abstract
137,559. Hall, M. W. Nov. 22, 1918. Valves; valve-gear; regulating.-A piston valve I and a concentric annular valve E are reciprocated by a half-speed shaft to control inlet and exhaust ports 15, 22 respectively. The exhaust port 22 is uncovered by the valve E and opens directly into the cylinder. Combustible mixture is delivered into the interior of the valve E through a port 18 and enters the cylinder through a port 20 controlled by the piston valve 1. When acted upon by the explosion pressures, the valves move towards the half-speed shaft, which is geared to the main shaft by a chain. Both shafts may be provided with fly-wheels, and in an aircraft engine, a propeller may be driven from the valve shaft. During normal working, the inleb port in the valve E is closed late in the compression stroke, a portion of each charge being rejected to the supply pipe. To vary the amount of the rejected charge, the position of the valve shaft is adjusted by altering the positions of the chain-tightening rollers R, R<1> shown in Fig. 10. The roller R is secured to an arm P" on a sleeve connected to a hand-lever P, the roller R<1> being mounted upon an arm S<1>. The arms are forced apart by an adjustable spring T mounted upon screws u, u<1>. By moving the lever P into the dotted-line position shown in Fig. 10, the slack in the driving-chain is transferred from one side of the valve shaft to the other, the position of the shaft relatively to the crank-shaft being altered in consequence. Bolts are housed in tubes k' and serve to hold in position the bearings of the two shafts.
