Abstract

1298266 Stabilization of photographic silver halide emulsions AGFA-GEVAERT A G 12 June 1970 [13 June 1969] 28490/70 Heading G2C [Also in Division C2] A process for the production of a photographic silver image comprises (a) exposing a material comprising at least one light-sensitive silver halide emulsion layer and (b) developing the layer in the presence of at least one mercapto compound of the formula:- or the thione tautomer thereof, wherein R 1 is an amino group which may be substituted or may be present in the form of a Schiff's base and R 2 is H or halogen. The amino group may be substituted by a substituted or unsubstituted benzylidene or naphthylidene group, or by one or more alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl groups which may be further substituted. The mercapto compound may be present in the material, e.g. in a silver halide emulsion layer or be added to the developer solution, which may be in the form of a concentrate. The mercapto compounds have a high stabilizing effect without impairing the sensitivity or gradation of the emulsions. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 868242.
