Abstract

1,247,884. Photographic process and materials containing zwitterionic compounds. EASTMAN KODAK CO. Oct. 2, 1968 [Oct.2, 1967], No.46678/68. Heading G2C. A process for producing a photographic image comprises developing an imagewise exposed photographic silver halide emulsion layer in the presence of a zwitterionic compound and an anionic compound which is a polymer having at least one anionic acidic substituent. The invention also comprises a sensitive photographic material comprising a support and a sensitive photographic silver halide emulsion layer which contains in the same or different layers thereof a zwitterionic compound and an anionic compound as defined above. The zwitterionic compound may be a sulphobetaine such as (3-sulphopropyl) dimethyldodecylanimonium hydroxide, inner salt, but many zwitterionic compounds are listed. Preferred anionic compounds are polymers having at least one anionic acidic substituent which may be a sulphate, sulphonate, sulphoxylate, sulphite, or sulphinate residue. The anionic compound may be the ammonium salt of dodecylphenylpolyethylene glycol ether sulphate or a copoly (butylacrylate-sulphonopropyl acrylate). Particularly useful are high-contrast photographic silver halide emulsions. The use of the anionic compound with the zwitterionic compound makes it possible to obtain increase in speed due to the zwitterionic compound without the increases in fog often associated with the use of zwitterions alone.
