Abstract

738,618. Photographic films. KODAK, Ltd. June 3, 1953 [June 4, 1952], No. 15280/53. Class 98 (2): The amount of desensitization on kinking of a photographic film comprising a support having a gelatino-silver halide emulsion layer of thickness greater than 0.4 mils. on each side, is reduced by incorporating in each emulsion an alkylbenzthiazolium salt having an alkyl group of at least 9 carbon atoms. The alkyl group may be n-nonyl, n-decyl, n-dodecyl or n-hexadecyl and the benzene ring may be substituted as in 3-n-lauryl-5-phenylbenzthiazolium iodide. The invention is particularly applicable to X- ray films, each emulsion generally being more than 0.6 mils. thick. There may be a gelatine layer (which may also contain other colloids) containing a non-diffusing, light-absorbing material coated over each emulsion layer, for example as described in Specification 583,508. Subbing layers such as antihalation layers may be provided between the support and the emulsion layers. A triangle test and a sensitometric bend test by means of which the amount of desensitization on kinking may be estimated, are described. Specification 522,997 also is referred to.
