1,247,883. Developing silver halide materials in the presence of zwitterions. EASTMAN KODAK CO. Oct. 2, 1968 Oct. 2, 1967], No. 46677/68. Heading G2C. A process for producing a photographic image comprises developing an imagewise exposed photographic silver halide emulsion layer in the presence of azwitterionic compound represented by one of the formulae:- wherein A is N or P; R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are each alkyl, aralkyl or substituted or unsubstituted aryl or two or all of them, together with A, form a heterocyclic ring; R 4 is a substituted or unsubstituted alkylene chain having one or more carbons; R 5 and R 6 one each substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or aryl and B<SP>-</SP> is an acidic anionic residue, and a cationic or non-ionic development accelerator. The zwitterionic compound and the cationic or non-ionic accelerator may be present in a solution or in the material. The cationic development accelerator may be a bis-pyridinium salt (e. g. 7, 18-diaza-6, 19-dioxotetracosane-1, 24-bis (pyridinium perchlorate)). The nonionic accelerator may be polyalkylene glycol or a thioether compound; in the examples polyethlene oxide oleyl ether having a molecular weight of 1540 is used. Many examples of zwitterionic compounds and cationic and non-ionic development accelerators are listed. The invention is particularly applicable to high contrast photographic emulsions. When photographic emulsion layers are developed in the presence of a zwitterionic and a cationic or non-ionic development accelerator according to this invention, an increase in speed is obtained with little or no increase in incubation or development fog. It has been found that using the development accelerator in combination with a zwitterionic compound yields synergistic speed gains.
