Abstract

1296539 Emergency lighting systems SOC DES ACCUMULATEURS FIXES ET DE TRACTION 29 Dec 1970 [24 Dec 1969] 62946/69 Heading H2H An emergency lighting system comprises a plurality of lighting units 1, 2, 3, each connected to an A.C. supply by way of a main switch 4 and a control switch 5, each of the lighting units including a main lamp 7 and an emergency lamp 15, the arrangement being such that when the A.C. supply exists the main lamps 7 are illuminated and when the A.C. supply has failed the emergency lamps 15 are energized by a battery 14. With a control switch 5 and a main switch 4 closed, the main lamps 7 are energized and a relay coil 9 energized by way of a resistor 12 and a capacitor 10 in parallel and a rectifier 11. The output terminals of the rectifier 11 are connected to the battery 14, thereby providing a trickle charge for the battery, the emergency lamp 15 being de-energized since the contacts 16 of the relay are open when the coil 9 is energized. An impedance 13 is connected in parallel with the coil 9, capacitor 10 and resistor 12 to allow an increase in the trickle charge current without increasing the current through the coil 9. When the A.C. supply fails the coil 9 de-energizes, contacts 16 close and the emergency lamp 15 is energized by the battery 14, thereby replacing the illumination of the main lamp 7. The operation of the emergency lamp 15 can be retained when the main lamp 7 is not in use by opening the switch 5 in which case the lighting units 1, 2, 3 are supplied with half wave rectified A.C. which permits charging of the battery 14 but, since the capacitor 8 charges, the lamp 7 is not supplied.
