Abstract
1295548 Driving gear H S POYSER 5 Nov 1970 [6 Nov 1969] 52698/70 Heading F1B Reciprocating piston engine has a cam-plate mounted on a drive shaft, the pistons transmitting their thrust directly to the edge of the plate. The width of the edge of the plate is increased by a transversely-projecting flange and each piston has a first roller engaging the radially outer surface of the flange and second rollers engaging the inner surface of the flange. The first roller and the outer surface of the flange have complementary cross-sections to prevent angular movement of the piston around its longitudinal axis. Three-lobe cam 10 rotates about axis 11 in housing 12, and passes through slots 16 and 15 in the piston 14 and cylinder 13 respectively. Flange 17 projects to either side of cam plate 10 and has a double-bevel which forms a ridge 20 which engages a groove 21 around a roller 18 mounted in the piston. Two rollers 19, also mounted in the piston engage the underside of the flange. In an alternative construction, the periphery of the plate 10 is grooved, and the roller is tapered towards each end.
