Abstract

1460890 Reciprocating piston IC engines H E ROBERTS 21 March 1974 [22 Dec 1972 23 March 1973] 59354/72 and 14053/73 Heading F1B [Also in Division F2] A piston 23 reciprocating in a cylinder 24 is coupled to a rotary shaft 11, 12 by a sleeve unit 15 rotatably mounted on a crank-pin 10, the sleeve unit 15 having a pinion 16 which is adapted to mesh a fixed ring of teeth 20 and an eccentric hub 17 which engages a big end 22 of a connecting rod 21. The axis of the hub 17 extends through the pitch circle of the pinion 16, and the diameter of the pitch circle of the ring of teeth 20 is twice that of the pinion 16 so that the axis of the hub 17 is caused to reciprocate along a straight line which intersects the axis of the shaft 11, 12. Alternatively, the sleeve unit 15 is formed integrally with the crank-pin 10 which is rotatably mounted in the shaft portions 11, 12. An opposed piston twin cylinder engine may be constructed by securing a second connecting rod to the rod 21. Additional big end bearing hubs may be formed integrally with the hub 17 and be secured to pistons in in-line or angularly spaced cylinders. Specification 1094649 is referred to.
