Abstract
1,227,399. I. C. engine crank-shafts. H.L. PAUL JNR. Aug. 13, 1968, No. 38685/68. Heading F1B. [Also in Division F2 A mechanism converting rectilinear reciprocating motion into rotary motion and vice versa, particularly for opposed piston I. C. engines in automobiles, airplanes, outboard motors, lawnmowers, snow removers, tools, motor-generator sets, and portable pump or compressor units, comprises a rectilinearly slidable member, such as 25, rotatably journalling, at 17, a disc 18 eccentrically journalled, at 19, on a crank-pin 24 of a shaft 21. The eccentricity of the journal 19 with respect is the centre of the disc 18 is equal to the throw of the crank, and the stroke of the member 25 is four times the crank-throw. The disc 18 and the shaft 21 rotate in opposite directions. In the engine shown, the member 25, preferably of one-piece construction comprises a pair of opposed pistons 32 connected by a web 33. The member 25 reciprocates in a cylinder 26 comprising hollow sections 27 bolted together and providing a shaft sleeve bearing extension 30. In Figs. 1-7 (not shown), the reciprocating member comprises a rod (11) sliding in a pair of fixed supports (13), the disc 18 being journalled in a bolted-together two-part yoke at the end of the rod. The journals and supports may include sleeve or ball, roller or needle bearings.
