Abstract
779,726. Two-stroke engines; driving-gear; lubricating. MESSERSCHMITT AKT.-GES. Sept. 14, 1955 [Sept. 27, 1954; Dec. 23, 1954; Jan. 7, 1955; Aug. 29, 1955], No. 26291/55. Class 7 (2). Two-stroke cylinders, e.g. five in number, encircling a main shaft 17, Fig. 8, have each two opposed double-acting pistons 9, 10 acting on fixed or, as shown, loose swash-plates 15, 16 via ball-seated members 11, 12. The pistons 9, 10 define loop-scavenged combustion spaces 6, 8 and a uniflow-scavenged combustion space 7, the swash-plates 15, 16 being maintained non-rotative, by gears 57, 58 incorporating thrust facings 60. In another form of ball-seated connection, Fig. 7, members 49 having plain or roller bearing on the ball head 39 co-act with piston parts 53 via cone-ended elements 51 rolling with line contact on coned ends of the members 49, 53. Locating cages 55 or balls 56 are employed. A single ball co-acting with plane faces or seatings on the members 53, 49 may replace each element 51, the balls being located on the members 49 by cages thereon. In a further form of ball-seated connection, Fig. 4, members 18, 19 connected to piston parts (not shown) have ends 20 working between a swashplate ball-end 22 and a split retaining ring 25, 26. Oiling ducts 33, and further ducts 35, are fed from a channel 31 via the ball-end interior 32. The engine may power turbo-compressors, rotary pumps, air-screws marine screws or, via gearing, vehicle wheels ; and may operate on the Otto or Diesel principle.
