Abstract
1294054 Electrolytic cleaning USS ENGS & CONSULTANTS Inc 19 April 1971 [20 April 1970] 26668/71 Heading C7B Steel strand, e.g. wire, rod or strip is cleaned to remove lubricant, e.g. oil, grease, soap and lubricant carrier from cold rolling or drawing particularly using a sodium stearate lubricant in a borax carrier, by electrolyzing it with D.C. at a C.D. of 30-60 A/in<SP>2</SP> for at least 0À4 e.g. 2À5 seconds in an aqueous alkaline electrolyte solution of alkali metal hydroxide, phosphate and carbonate. Preferably the solution contains 6-16% NaOH, 0À5-6% Na 4 P 2 O 7 and 0À5-5% Na 2 CO 3 ; alternatively, Na 3 PO 4 or sodium tripolyphosphate and sesquicarbonate may be used. The polarity of the strand may be reversed as it passes through a series of cleaning chambers, e.g. 1 second as cathode followed by 1 second as anode, being anode in the final chamber; an Fe electrode is preferably used. The cleaned strand may be subsequently flash plated from a Zn(CN) 2 bath prior to electroless plating from a CuSO 4 bath.
