Abstract

129,398. Johnson, P. S. May 9, 1918. Spray burners.-A burner for use with creosotepitch or similar mixtures comprises an outer casing 1 the nozzle 11 of which is controlled by a valve 16 formed by the end of an adjustable tube 4 which is advanced or withdrawn by means of a hand-wheel 19. The other end of the tube 4 slides over a sleeve the position of which may be adjusted by a hand-wheel 24. Rotation of the tube and sleeve are prevented by a bolt 20 passing through slots therein and secured to the casing. Liquid fuel and air are supplied by pipes 15, 8 respectively to chambers 13, 10, the fuel obtaining access to the interior of the sleeve through ports 28, 29 in the tube and sleeve respectively, while the air also obtains access to the interior of the sleeve through similar ports 30, 31, which are in the rear of the fuel ports. The sleeve is adjusted so that the fuel ports do not begin to overlap so as to admit fuel until the air ports and nozzle 11 are open by a desired amount Thereafter, the admission of air and fuel is simultaneously and proportionately controlled by the movement of the adjustable tube only. The ports in the tube and sleeve are preferably diamondshaped or oblong, with the longer diagonal parallel with the axis of the tube; or they may be square with a diagonal parallel with the axis of the tube..Instead of sliding over, the adjustable tube 4 may slide within the sleeve. The Provisional Specification states that the portions of the adjustable tube in front of and behind the ports are reduced in diameter and fitted with rings of asbestos or other packing-material to prevent leakage.
