Abstract

1408136 Burners; varying flame length BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION 29 Sept 1972 [1 Oct 1971] 45844/71 Heading F4T A method of producing variable flame length from a stream of fuel and a stream of oxidant flowing into each other comprises, before the two streams contact each other, partly obstructing the stream of oxidant by a fluid obstacle to give said oxidant stream turbulence to promote intermixing of the two streams, the fluid obstacle being provided by discharging fluid with a component of movement in an upstream direction relative to the general direction of flow of the stream of oxidant and the length of flame produced by burning the resultant mixture being variable by varying the amount of obstruction provided by the fluid obstacle. A burner gun is located in a housing having an inlet for an oxidant and comprises concentric tubes 10, 11, 12, an oil inlet 21 through which oil is supplied to the centre of tube 12, an inlet 22 through which an atomizing fluid, e.g. steam or air, is supplied to annular space 16 and an inlet 23 through which the flame length control fluid, e.g. steam or air, is supplied to annular space 15. The control fluid issues from the gun through a ring of outlets 4 which are rearwardly directed so that turbulence is produced in a stream of oxidant flowing in the housing to meet the atomized fuel stream issuing from venturi 31 and nozzle 8. In a modification atomizing fluid is introduced into tube 52 and oil into annular space 54 between tubes 51, 52 and is atomized by the fluid discharging from tube 52. The control fluid issues from annular passage 53 through a rearwardly directed annular slot 63. Variation of flame length may be automatic, the distribution of heat provided by the flame being sensed to control adjustment of a valve in the control fluid supply so that the amount of obstruction provided by the fluid obstacle can be varied. One or more of the fuel, oxidant and fluid may be heated either by preheating or preheating the chamber in which the flame is to burn.
