Abstract

261,006. Hetsch, F. K. Nov. 4, 1925, [Convention date]. Spray, pulverulent fuel, and blowpipe burners.-The casing 1 of a burner is formed with an inlet 2 for air or steam, an inlet 3 for combustible gas or air charged with combustible material such as coal-dust or sawdust, and three inlets 5 for liquid fuel communicating with an annular supply groove 19 in a ring 4. The casing is open at both ends one end forming the discharge nozzle and the other being closed by a coverplate 6. The coverplate 6 is formed with a tubular extension 7 which communicates by an opening 44 with the gas inlet 3 and carries an extension member 8. A spindle 9 passing through the coverplate 6 carries the hub 14 of a piston valve slidable in the ring 4. The spindle 9 may be turned so as to move the piston valve axially by means of a hand-lever 11 having a projecting lug 12 which is maintained in engagement with a notched cam-shaped guide 18 on the cover 6 by the pressure of a spring 42 on the hub 14. The movement of the piston valve regulates (1) the air issuing into the burner nozzle between surfaces 15, 16 on the casing and valve, through a port 20 formed in the valve, and between surfaces 17, 18 on the valve and extension 8, (2) the gas entering the discharge nozzle between a surface 23 on the extension 8 and a surface 24 on the hub 14, (3) the number of radial oil holes 25 in the valve in communication with the annular groove 19. A rotary movement is imparted to the gas and air by helical ribs 21 connecting the piston valve to the hub 14 and by helical ribs 22 arranged in the air passage between the surfaces 17, 18. The ribs 22 may increase in thickness in the direction of flow. The guide 13 and surfaces 15, 18, 23 are so shaped as to permit a fine adjustment of the burner for light fuel consumptions and a coarser adjustment for heavy fuel consumptions. To prevent dribbling, the piston valve is formed with grooves 26 - - 29 communicating with the interior by radial holes 30. A chamber having a siphon tube overflow may be provided in the casing to lead off oil oozing past the valve. When a low grade gas is being burnt the air and gas inlets may be interchanged and when liquid fuel only is being used air may be admitted through the opening 44. The spindle of the piston valve may be hollow to-allow the introduction of a gas flame or electric igniter at starting and to form a sight hole. The surfaces 15, 16, 18, 23 are approximately cylindrical form and are carried by detachable parts so as to be interchangeable with others according to the different pressures &c. of gas 'and air employed. In a simpler construction of burner the middle air port is omitted.
