Abstract
1291991 Shrimp culture G E SPENCER (MARIFARMS Inc) 21 Oct 1969 51549/69 Heading A1A A method of cultivating shrimp is characterised by growing diatoms in the upper levels of a depth of saline water and to a concentration sufficient to absorb direct sunlight so that shrimp larvae growing in the water feed on the diatoms which are continuously circulated by a mechanical impeller 33 or pump and supplying oxygen through pipes 34 to maintain a minimum concentration of 2.5 ccs per litre and later, feeding the shrimp on invertebrate meat. Nutrient salts are added to the water to encourage diatom propagation and the water maintained at a minimum depth of 1.5 m and at a temperature between 20C and 32C and vertically growing plants are introduced to provide shelter for the shrimp and additional oxygens. The growing pond 52 is connected to the sea both by an inlet 59 and a pump 55 with filtered conduits 54 and contains a culture tank 32 with a hatching tank 31, having sides of woven synthetic fibre, suspended in the culture tank by means of floats 50. Similar woven fabric is used for the water inlet and outlet screening 36 and for the walls 53 of the culture tank. After spawning the adult females are removed from the hatching tank and shortly after hatching the nauplii are transferred to the culture tank. After the postlarva stage the young shrimp are then transferred to the growing pond. After the zoeal stage artemia are a particularly suitable food and preferably a pond 68 (not shown) is provided for hatching and growing artemia to be used as food with one artemia pond able to supply food for two similarly sized shrimp ponds. Where the sea water is contaminated it is passed through a sand filter tank 40 (not shown).
