Abstract

1291457 Shrimp culture MARIFARMS Inc 21 Oct 1969 51550/69 Heading A1A A method of cultivating shrimp comprises placing a controlled number of egg-carrying female shrimp in a controlled environment of sea-water of predetermined area and depth for spawning, controlling the aeration, removing adults and abnormal eggs after spawning, controlling the number of nauplii, growing phytoplankton in the environment, feeding the nauplii in the early larva stages on this plankton, and maintaining the temperature of at at least 25‹C during spawning and hatching and at at least 25‹C during the early larva stages. The hatching tanks 10, 20 can be charged and discharged with sea water passed through a filter box 22 by means of a siphon or water gate which may be provided with a suitable pump. The roof 21 of the hatchery is of semitransparent material equipped with blinds and light fixtures to regulate illumination during day and night. The numbers of eggs and nauplii are regulated throughout cultivation by random sample counting and appropriate filtering nets. The propagation of diatom plankton food culture is stimulated in enclosure 35 by introducing nutrient salts after which it is transferred to the nauplii tanks. A further food culture including benthic diatoms is prepared and used to feed the shrimp on about the third day of the zoea stage and supplemented by other foods such as nematoda, fish eggs, bivalve larvae &c. During the following mysis development, animal-type food is used such as artemia (brine shrimp). In the post-larva period only fish-meat and bivalves are fed. The young shrimp are then transferred to the culture pond which may depend on tidal flow to bring in water and plankton and remove waste as in 40 or may have an artificially controlled current of water. The water depth is at least 1m and the pond has a gently undulating floor of sand with hillocks 151 in which the shrimp may hide and aeration devices 242 provided.
