Abstract
1288977 Preventing breakage of are furnace electrodes L VALSECCHI 2 Dec 1969 [19 April 1969] 58692/69 Heading H5H The electrode 12 is raised by pressure of liquid supplied through pipe 11 and subsequently, during use, is allowed to fall slowly under its own weight which is balanced by the pressure fluid. The pressure drives the piston in cylinder 1 to the bottom and maintains the electrical contacts (15, 16) closed to maintain the circuit to the regulator control. A constant pressure of fluid, less than the working pressure in pipe 11 is maintained through reservoir 9 to the underside of the piston in the cylinder 1. If the electrode meets an obstruction in its downward travel, the pressure in pipe 11 falls until it is less than the pressure in reservoir 9, with the result that the piston in cylinder 1 is raised by the latter. In consequence, the electrical contacts (15, 16) are opened and cause regulator to increase the pressure in pipe 11 and raise the electrode assembly.
