A constant pressure of fluid, less than the working pressure in pipe 11 is maintained through reservoir 9 to the underside of the piston in the cylinder 1. If the electrode meets an obstruction in its downward travel, the pressure in pipe 11 falls until it is less than the pressure in reservoir 9, with the result that the piston in cylinder 1 is raised by the latter. In consequence, the electrical contacts (15, 16) are opened and cause regulator to increase the pressure in pipe 11 and raise the electrode assembly.
