Abstract

1338560 Buoyancy operated lifting or lowering CAMMELL LAIRD SHIPBUILDERS Ltd 19 April 1971 [31 Jan 1970] 4773/70 Heading B7S A buoyancy operated lifting or lowering device comprises a closed hollow body 10 and a valve 1la at the lower part of the body whereby it may be flooded when immersed so as to cause it to descend. Valve 11 at the upper part of the hollow body enables gas to be discharged during the flooding of the body and gas supply 13 is connected to the upper part of the body to displace water from the interior and so adjust buoyancy. Pressure sensitive valve 12 in the gas supply connections and on the hollow body responds to the changing hydrostatic pressure on the body thus providing gas flow to maintain internal pressure balance so that water level in and buoyancy of the hollow body will not change during descent. Gas pressure relief tubes 15 connected to the upper part of the hollow body provide for the discharge of gas from the hollow body during its ascent, so that internal pressure is maintained at the ambient pressure.
