Abstract
629,811. Glass manufacture. SMITH, A. E. Dec. 10, 1947, No. 32539. Convention date, Dec. 11, 1946. Drawings to Specification. [Class 56] In glass manufacture a storage chamber or chambers of relatively large capacity is/are arranged between the melting chamber and the working chamber so that during week-ends or other periods when no glass is being withdrawn from the working chamber full melting may continue in the melting chamber. The chambers are arranged on successively lower levels and the melt gravitates into the storage chamber where it is stored until it is required in the working chamber to which it gravitates as required. The glass may be maintained liquid in the storage chamber by appropriate heating means, e.g. immersed electrodes, or the heat therein may be arranged to be sufficient to fine the glass. The flow from melting to storage chamber may be controlled by a valve or weir and that from storage to working chamber by a valve which maintains a substantially constant level in the working chamber.
