Abstract

1283198 Furnace linings BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION 3 July 1970 [7 July 1969] 34164/69 Heading F4B A blast furnace lining is formed from horizontal annular courses of elongated refractory blocks, opposed side faces 1, 2 of which, when the furnace is cool, lie in vertical planes parallel to but not including the vertical furnace axis, the blocks being laid up such that the longitudinal axis, e.g. y 1 -y 1 of each of the blocks makes an angle # with the associated furnace radius, e.g. 20. Expansion of the blocks on heating up of the furnace, is taken up (Fig. 5, not shown) by the blocks pivoting about vertical axes parallel to the furnace axis, near to their curved ends 4, so that the angle # tends to diminish towards zero. Preferably, the inner ends 3 of the blocks make angles # with lines, e.g. x-x perpendicular to their longitudinal axes, so that by aligning the ends 3 of the blocks initially during their laying up, their correct positioning to allow for expansion is attained. Alternatively (not shown), the blocks may be laid with the planes of their convergent surfaces 1, 2 coincident with the vertical furnace axis, but being inclined upwardly or downwardly to the horizontal at an angle #, so that they may pivot in a vertical plane to accommodate expansion. The angle # lies between 0 and 15 degrees and preferably equals 6 degrees.
