C. engine in which a supercharger 16, Fig. 2 supplies air or mixture to the inlet port 7 through a chamber 13, a resonant pipe 11, a resonant vessel 9 and induction pipe 8, the dimensions of the pipe 11 and vessel 9 are such that at engine speeds corresponding to maximum power or maximum torque a pressure wave, resulting from the opening or closing of the inlet port, is reinforceably resonance in the resonant vessel and resonant pipe to urge additional air or mixture into the cylinder to supplement the charge delivered by the supercharger, Two, three or four induction pipes from cylinders whose induction strokes do not overlap may be connected to a common resonant vessel. Two or more resonant vessels 9, 10 may be connected to a distribution vessel 13.
