Abstract

1280465 Coin-freed locks JAMES GIBBONS Ltd 2 Oct 1969 [4 Oct 1968] 47230/68 Heading G4V A coin-freed, key-operated lock for a luggage- or clothes-deposit locker comprises a first slide 3 that can be moved by a key to slide the lock bolt 2, but is normally prevented from sliding the bolt home by an abutment 22 on a second slide 12, unless the slides 3, 12 are coupled together for simultaneous, parallel movement by a coin 18 supported in respective coin channels 10 and 17. The key can be removed only when the bolt 2 is fully shot. A coin 18 inserted in a slot 11 is supported in the coin channels 10 and 17 by a stationary step 19. Rotation of the key rotates the plug 8 of a cylinder-type lock mechanism counterclockwise, together with an attached cam 7 that bears against an abutment 9 of the slide 3 to move the slides 3, 12 and so slide the bolt 2 home (see Fig. 5, not reproduced). Simultaneously the coin 18 drops from the step 19 to be supported by the housing 1, and the coin slot 11 is blocked by a pin 25. On reverse rotation of the key, the bolt 2 and slides 3, 12 are retracted by a spring 4, the slide 12 pushing the coin 18 into a channel 20 (see Fig. 6, not reproduced) leading to a coin box or back to the operator. If the key is turned without coin insertion, complete rotation of the cam 7 is prevented by co-operation between a pin 21 and the abutment 22 of the immobile slide 12. In a modification (Figs. 1-3, not shown), the step 19 is located immediately above the channel 20, to allow the coin 18 to pass to the channel 20 when the bolt 2 is shot home.
