Pistons; pistons, cooling. - A non-metallic piston of an internalcombustion, steam, or other engine is made of tubular form, with a metal end-cap and bearings. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the body 10 consists of one or more wooden blocks, with a central bore 12, preferably having flat opposite surfaces 13. The metal cap 16 is formed with flat projections 19 into which the bearings 14 are screwed, unscrewing being prevented by a packing-ring 26 which fits into notches in the bushes. The cap has strengthening and cooling cross-ribs 20, and a depending flange 17 carrying a packing- ring and fitting into a recess in the wooden body. In a modification, the projections 19 are dispensed with, and the cap is held in place by longitudinal bolts or otherwise, and the bushes are formed with inner flanges to prevent their outward displacement. As shown in Fig. 5, the head of the piston may be of wood covered by a thin metal plate 16b, under which a sheet of asbestos or other non-conducting material may be placed. The cap is formed with a flange 17<b> having prongs 28 which are driven into the wooden body.
