Abstract

1,273,334. Mineral-mining equipment. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd. 1 Jan., 1971 [15 Jan., 1970], No. 1965/70. Heading E1F. An electromagneticradiation emitter/detector 30 for monitoring the thickness of roof mineral left by the cutter means of a longwall mining machine and controlling the steering of the machine in accordance with the monitored thickness is so adjustably mounted on the machine as to be maintainable close to the roof as the machine is steered either upwards or downwards in accordance with the monitoring of the emitter/detector. The emitter/detector is either rigidly or movably mounted on one end of an arm 90 either rigid with or having a pivotal mounting on the machine that is either co-axial with or offset from the axis of rotation of a cutter drum of the machine. The emitter/detector may move laterally by either moving relative to the arm or by the arm being movable laterally of the machine. The emitter/detector may be spring- biassed upwardly of the arm, or the arm may be upwardly movable by a biassing spring or by a piston cylinder unit 110. A safety cut out is provided in the emitter/detector to isolate the unit should it suddenly move upwards into a roof cavity.
