Abstract
918,251. Mineral-mining machines. JOY-SULLIVAN Ltd. Aug. 8, 1961 [June 7, 1960], 19901/60. Class 68 (1). A carriage 12 is mounted for longitudinal movement along a self-advancing base 10 and at the leading end of the carriage is mounted for rotation about a horizontal axis extending longitudinally of the carriage a cutter-carrying arm 26 that may be swung in a vertical plane through an arc of at least 180 degrees to remove mineral from the face. Preferably, a number of pick-armed cutter drums 31, 32 are mounted on the leading face of the arm to rotate about axes extending at right angles to the arm. The arm is swung by actuation of two hydraulic rams 50, 46 acting on circumferentially spaced lugs 49, 45 integral with a longitudinal tube rotatably mounted on the carriage. Rotatably mounted in this tube is a further tube to the leading end of which is secured the arm. The ram 50 is pivotally mounted at 51 on a bracket 52 secured to the carriage and the ram 46 is pivotally coupled at 47 to the outer end of the arm 26. Vertically adjustable roofsupporting means are mounted at the top of arch frames extending up from the base above the carriage.
