In a diesel engine fuel injection pump having a plurality of pumping plungers 11 rotatable in unison by a rod 16 to control the point at which their spill ports 17 are opened, each delivery valve 13 is provided with a piston portion 23 of substantial length whereby the ratio of the volume sucked back after valve closure to the delivered volume is between 1 and 1À5. The resulting rapid pressure drop in the delivery line 14 has to be restored during the next injection stroke and hence the commencement of injection is retarded at low speed. Consequently a decreased amount of smoke is emitted. To compensate the fact that retarded injection results in reduced delivery at low speed, the control rod 16 is provided with a spring stop 24. The stop is loaded by a spring 29 and via a lever to the opposing action of a speed governor 28 and a spring 25 connected to a throttle control 27. At low speeds the spring 25 overcomes the spring 29 and allows the control rod to move in a direction to provide an increase in the delivered volume.
