Abstract

1,263,061. Two part couplings. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. 3 Feb., 1969 [2 Feb., 1968], No. 5518/68. Heading H2E. Interengaging identical contact pins (Fig. 1) each have portions 3, 3a (Figs. 1 and 3) of truncated sector cross-section joined by a web portion 4 with an open ended slot 6 which may be outwardly flared at the tip. Nose portions 7, an aperture 8 and wing portions 9 (Fig. 3) having bent portions 9a, 9b (Fig. 1) may also be provided. The contact pin may be made by extruding or drawing the required cross-section with or without portions 9, punching the slot 6 and aperture 8, and cutting to length. A moulded insulated housing 2 (e.g. of polypropylene) for housing each contact pin comprises a body portion 12 (Fig. 6) with a longitudinal bore 13, enlarged (as at 13a, Fig. 8, not shown), to provide space for soldered connections, and includes portions 14, 14a projecting from the body, 14a having a slot 17 in which wing portions 9 of the pin are located. The housing 2 may have dovetail portions 19 and complementarily shaped grooves on opposite faces, and may include a resilient tongue 21 with a hook portion 22. A composite block of housings 2 may be formed by engaging portions 19 with grooves of adjacent housings to provide a multiway connector; the orientation of the units may be different (Fig. 12, not shown) to match only a particular assembly of pins, or, a number of contact pins may be inserted in a single insulating housing to provide a multi-way connector. A modification of the invention comprises a double ended pin (Fig. 13, not shown) for connection through bulkheads. A metallic commoning plate (30, Fig. 17, not shown) may be used to connect adjacent contact pins electrically.
