Abstract

1389170 Electric couplings AMP Inc 21 May 1973 [30 May 1972] 24030/73 Heading H2E An electrical terminal 2, Fig. 2, comprises inclined sides 10 with their free ends bent to form feet 14 from which blind ended slots 16 extend into a connecting bight 8 to define a mouth into which insulated wire can be forced transversely of its axis so that the edges of the slot pierce its insulation 6 and contact its conductive core 4. The angle between the sides may be 60 degrees and the slot is widened at the mouth, but otherwise of uniform width and divides each foot 14 into parts 22 which are elastically deformed by the wire widening the slot. Thus there are four substantially independent springs formed from parts 22. The feet and slots may be of unequal length so that the longer slot and foot provide strain relief. Feet 14 may have ring tongues as terminal portions brass, beryllium copper or phosphor bronze. In another embodiment the sides of the terminal element are parallel. In another the feet bend inwards and abut. Another is L-shaped and has one side and foot. Fig. 16 (not shown) shows a channel shaped embodiment with the sides (108) bent towards each other, the feet being joined by a web (106). Fig. 8 shows a multi-wire terminal block 28 comprising an insulating housing having base 30 with closure member 32 and with cavity 40 and floor recessed at 41 to locate terminals 34, having erect portion 36 extending from one foot and seating against a back wall and three wire receiving slots separated by slots 38. Lateral extension 42 has passageways 44 into cavity 40. Closure member 32 has flanges 46 which become disposed against the side walls of the base, interengaging dimples and recesses 50, 51 locking it in position, legs 48 flexing to push wires extending through passageways 44 into slots in the contact element, 34. Housings may be of suitable thermoplastics such as nylon. Another embodiment Fig. 10 (not shown) shows a connector for connecting one wire end to the intermediate portion of another wire, which is introduced through a keyhole slot in the side. Another embodiment, Fig. 12 (not shown), shows a disengageable connector for a plurality of wires and conducting paths on a circuit board, which enters through an aperture. Its cavity is divided into compartments each with a contact element having under one foot a reversely bent contact portion which resiliently contacts a conducting path. It may be adapted for contact pins by providing separate passageways.
