Abstract

1,261,424. Electro-chemical analysis. WILKINSON SWORD Ltd. Aug.3, 1970 [Sept. 17, 1969], No.45709/69. Heading G1N. The presence of a passivating film on e. g. razor blade strip, is determined by making the strip one electrode of a cell whose other electrode is electro-chemically inert in use e.g. platinum. A first voltage is applied with the platinum as anode for a set time, and then a small reverse voltage is applied (platinum as cathode) and the resulting current is measured. A relay control circuit with capacitor timing is shown. Manual start switch 20 causes all relays to be energized connecting +1À75 volts to the cell; capacitor 22 discharges after e.g. 0À5 secs releasing relay 14 to connect -0À75 volts to the cell and in another e.g. 0À1 secs capacitor 24 discharges sufficiently to release relay 18 which connects the current record 28 in circuit. The cell may be modified by containing the electrolyte in an absorbent pad, to test continuous blade strip.
