Abstract

579,202. Determining dimensions of materials. ARMOUR RESEARCH FOUNDATION. Feb. 24, 1944, No.. 3460. Convention date, Sept. 25, 1943. [Class 37] Apparatus for determining the thickness of metal coatings on foundations of dissimilar metals or alloys or of a non-metallic character includes means defining a chamber for an electrolyte in confined contact with the coating to be measured and an electrode forming with the coating and electrolyte a cell for generating an electric current in the chamber to effect the anodic dissolution of the metal of the coating. The coating 12 whose thickness is to be measured is formed on a base or foundation metal 11. A cylindrical metal member 14 rests on the coating 12, making electrical contact therewith, and is formed with a cylindrical axial cavity 15 restricted at its upper end by an inturned annular shoulder 16. Within the cavity is positioned a composite insulating and sealing member 17 comprising a cylinder 18 of plastic material, rubber &c. in the lower end of which is a sealing washer or gasket 19 which extends beyond the lower edge of the cylinder 18 to rest upon the coating 12. The washer 19 also extends into the cylinder 18 to provide an annular shoulder against which rests the lower end of a hollow electrode 22, which is thus insulated from the coating 12. A spring 23 engaging the shoulder 16 presses the washer 19 into sealing contact with the coating 12. The electrode 22 is partly filled with an electrolyte, which makes contact with the coating 12 over the area exposed by the aperture in the washer 19. The cell so formed is connected by leads 28, 30 in series with a switch, milliammeter, and rheostat. The switch is closed and a stopwatch started, the current drawn from the cell being maintained at a predetermined value. The endpoint, or the removal of all the coating metal, is indicated when the current changes rapidly and can no longer be maintained constant by the rheostat. At this point the stopwatch is stopped and the switch opened, the time taken being a measure of the thickness or weight of the coating. The electrolyte may be a 10 per cent. solution of sodium hydroxide and the cathode may be brass or copper coated with a tarnish film. To increase the constancy of the current a small quantity of an oxidizing agent such as hydrogen peroxide or sodium hypochloride may be added to the electrolyte.
