Abstract

564,516. Determining physical qualities of materials; galvanic batteries. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. Feb. 19, 1943, No. 2800. Convention date, April 21, 1942. [Classes 37 and 53] Apparatus for testing the composition of a metal surface comprises a battery cell having a casing open at one end, two electrolytes, a porous partition separating the electrolytes, an electrode of known composition in one of the electrolytes, and means for using the surface of the metal to be tested as both a closure for the open end casing and as the other electrode. A tube 10 of insulating material such as rubber encloses a porous cup 12 which divides the interior of the tube into two chambers 16, 18. Electrolytes suitable for a Daniell cell are placed on opposite sides of the porous partition. The end of the chamber 18 is closed by an insulating plug 20 through which passes an electrode 22 in the form of a bolt with a large rounded head 24 and a nut 26 which clamps a terminal 28 against a washer 30. The opposite end of the tube 10 is left open and formed to fit the surface of the metal to be tested so as to make a fluid-tight seal. The metal to be tested, is shown as a coating 34 applied to the surface of a plate 32. The cup 12 may be sealed into the tube 10 by compressing the tube on to it by means of a wire 36 wound about the outside of the tube. The potential of the cell is measured by a potentiometer 42. A calibration curve may be plotted to indicate the proportions of any two selected elements, for example, lead and indium.
