Abstract

1,233,789. Measuring soil moisture content electrically. SIEMENS A. G. Sept. 26, 1968, (Nov.7, 1967], No.45866/68. Heading G1N. [Also in Division H1] A capacitor for testing soil moisture content comprises a porous dielectric 3, a rod electrode 1 and a helical electrode 12 disposed coaxially of the rod in a helical groove on the dielectric, which latter is a ceramic of known porosity and pore size. One or each of the electrodes has a coating (not shown) of a synthetic plastics insulating material. In use, the capacitor is brought into contact with a soil to be tested so that the dielectric absorbs water from the soil and the resultant capacitance is dependent upon the porosity and pore size of the tested soil. The capacitor may be celibrated if the porosity and pore size of the tested soil are known. The dielectric 3 can be chosen to be of similar porosity and pore size to the soil to be tested. The capacitor forms part of an A. C. measuring bridge. 5-11.
