Abstract
947,857. Measuring electrically. J. L. SHAW. June 21, 1960 [ June 23, 1959], No. 21423/59. Heading G1N. A humidity sensitive capacitor comprises a metal base provided with an insulating surface layer having pores or capillaries extending part way through from its outer surface and filled with an aqueous solution of a hygroscopic substance, the layer being covered with a water vapour permeable conducting layer. In the preferred method of manufacture of the element an aluminium wire is anodised to form a surface layer having pores, this layer is covered, e.g. by graphite or by vacuum deposition with a layer of gold, the hygroscopic solution being painted over the anodised layer, or alternatively over the conducting layer if the layer is water permeable. The hygroscopic solution may be lithium chloride, calcium chloride, or chromium oxide. The element may be connected in an A.C. bridge circuit. Acccording to the Provisional Specification the device is heated before use in a very dry atmosphere or may be heated in situ.
